Thermaltake is best known for its PC cooling components and cases, but it also sells a lot of power supply units and has recently added another to their range – the TR2 800W.

This PSU is aimed at the performance user on a budget, selling for the same price as many other 600W to 650W units from other reliable brands. Looks-wise it’s a very generic unit with a plain black sprayed case and black mesh sleeved cables – all hardwired, no modular cabling here.

A little online investigation reveals that the internals of this power supply are manufactured by FSP, a Taiwanese based company that also makes units for Antec, OCZ, SilverStone and Zalman, which is a reasonably good indication that it’s of a high quality.

Short of any serious PSU testing hardware, the most I could throw at it was my highly-overclocked Intel Core i7 system running twin Radeon HD 6870s – a setup which draws about 550W.

The TR2 800W obviously didn’t even break a sweat with this load, however I did notice the fan starting to speed up to an audible level after a few minutes of full system load.

If your system requires a lot of juice and you’re not looking for a top-shelf PSU, this simple little Thermaltake unit is definitely worth checking out.
