Razer Ferox gaming speakers

Razer's Ferox speakers are simple but sexy, and Razer claims they’re “tiny but mighty”. Tiny they may be – they’re about as tall and wide as a tube of lipstick – but mighty they are not. The Ferox speakers had the worst frequency response of all the speakers in our roundup by a long way, at 150Hz – 20kHz, and the low notes suffered for it. The Ferox speakers could be quite tinny at times, and could not cope with both bass and volume.

That said, you have to take these speakers for what they are – they’re designed for portability, not epic sound quality. If you’re looking for sound on a laptop, keep in mind that the Logitech Z305 speakers offer better sound quality and cost a mere $10 extra. But the Ferox speakers will work with other form factors, so if you want portability between desktop PCs or tablets, Razer’s offering will do the trick. The devices will need both a USB port and a 3.5mm audio jack though – the Ferox speakers require both.

Unfortunately, the cord for these speakers is also too short – when threaded behind a 21-inch monitor, it barely stretched far enough to have one speaker on each side. An even bigger problem is how short the cord is on the USB/audio end. If your USB port and audio jack are more than a few centimetres apart, you simply can't use these speakers. At all.

We can’t rate the Ferox speakers highly because of their tinny sound quality and the way instruments and notes all blend together, but they are extremely mobile for a desktop PC gamer on the go.
