Logitech G930

Don’t like being chained to your computer? Yeah, I don’t either. Fortunately, I managed to use Logitech’s G930 gaming headset from the opposite side of the room to my test PC, and even through walls. The G930 is easy to set up – just plug in the wireless transmitter via USB and it installs the drivers automatically. Because it connects via USB, it has one of the coolest features for gamers or music lovers: virtual surround sound.

Where surround sound is ordinarily provided by your sound card, if at all, the G930 provides this functionality itself – even if your sound card doesn’t support it. The feature works well. I was able to hear full surround while playing Battlefield: Bad Company 2, which was especially awesome when tanks went rumbling past and I could hear it in one ear, then the other.

Build-wise, Logitech’s headset isn’t as solid as the Sennheiser products I’ve seen lately, but it does have swivelling ear cups that allow easy storage, and the ability to turn up the volume on particular audio tracks – you can allocate a button to make the voice track louder than the music, for example, and another button to make the sound of gunfire and explosions overrule everything else.

The feature-packed nature of the G930 headset makes it at least as good as Sennheiser’s PC 360, even if the sound quality suffers slightly, and it costs significantly less. In terms of value for money, this is hands-down the best headset we’ve tested this year.
