Review: Logitech G600 MMO Mouse

Buttons. Buttons, everywhere.

Ever look at a mouse with ten buttons (or more!) and think, “You know, that’s just not enough buttons for me”? Well, you’re in luck, because Logitech’s upcoming MMO gaming mouse has 20 of them, all of which are customisable.

The G600 is a corded mouse for two breeds of serious MMO gamer. There’s the kind who plays MMOs where the skills just stack up, and stack up, and then stack up again, until you have too many to assign to the number keys on your keyboard. Then there are those who prefer using the mouse to battle, which frees up the left hand to keep moving around while attacking.

The G600 takes a bit of getting used to. Rather than just the traditional left-click and right-click, there’s an additional button that your ring finger rests on, right of the right-click, which is the ‘G-shift’ button (more on that soon). Then you’ve got your scroll wheel, and 12 buttons on the left-hand side of the mouse that sit underneath your thumb. All of these buttons can be changed to match any key on the keyboard.

Not only that, but when you use G-shift, those 12 buttons on the left side can switch to match even more buttons. You can use the first button instead of pressing the number 1, and then press G-shift, and use that same button instead of pressing Ctrl-1. As such, you can assign double the number of attacks to those buttons. The only problem with the G-shift button is that, at first, we kept thinking it was the right-click in the heat of battle.

You need to download some software from Logitech’s website to customise the buttons, but it’s well worth it – you can also adjust the colours that light up the mouse, so it’ll match your rig. When we downloaded the software, it wasn’t yet available on the New Zealand website – it auto-detects which country you’re in, so you might have to manually choose Logitech’s US website like we did.

Compared to the G600’s closest competitor, the Razer Naga, the G600 is pretty plain looking. Sure it lights up and stuff, but it’s not the most interesting looking device. It is solid, however, and seems like it could withstand a lot. The buttons don’t seem easily breakable, despite how furiously we were mashing them while playing The Secret World. Our thumbs didn’t get sore even after hours of gaming, and it sits nicely in the hand.

But there’s not much to fault the G600 on. It’s a good mouse, and once you’re used to it, you’ll be gaming away with one hand and throttling your enemies. Given time, it does make gaming significantly easier, and gives you a nice advantage over your guildmates. The price is pretty reasonable, too.
