Setting up the MixAmp is very straightforward. It can be powered by USB, but you can also use it with your portable MP3 player, so it can also be battery powered.

The audio signal can also travel to the MixAmp via the USB connection, but the best option would be to use a TOSlink cable for an optical connection to provide optimum sound quality. This also allows you to send 5.1 channel digital audio to the unit.

The MixAmp also features Dolby Headphone mode which simulates surround sound using just your two headphone speakers, allowing you to perceive whether sounds are coming from behind or in front of you, not just from the left or right.

The USB connection can also carry voice data for applications like Ventrilo and TeamSpeak. Using USB for voice and an optical connection for game sound enables you to utilise the ‘mixing’ functionality of the MixAmp as well – this is where the smaller control knob below the main volume knob comes into the picture. Turned one way it will make game sounds louder and voice quieter, and vice versa when turned the other way.

As for the A40 headset, it produces top-notch audio for gaming with punchy mid-tones and great soundstaging, especially with Dolby Headphone mode engaged. It’s not so suited to music playback as low-end bass is present but not strong, and the high-end seems a little muted as well.

The detachable microphone has good sensitivity and voices sound natural and clear on the other end. Comfort factor is also very high – the circumaural cups are nicely padded and grip pressure is just right.

For the price you could probably find a comparable quality headset, but the MixAmp is great value as headset amplifiers can easily cost twice the price. If you’re a gamer, I definitely, definitely recommend you put this system on your must-have list.
