Huawei launches Android 4.0 smartphone for $279

Huawei's affordable Y201 has gone on sale in New Zealand.

The Huawei Ascend Y201 will launch on Monday with Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) and near-field communications functionality.

The Ascend Y201 will cost $279 and launch through 2degrees. It supports 2degrees' Touch2Pay service in Wellington.


The Ascend Y201 has a 3.5-inch screen with a 320 x 480 pixel resolution. It featues a Qualcomm 800MHz processor and 4GB memory, expandable with a microSD up to 32GB.

The Y201 has just 256MB RAM and a 3.2 megapixel camera.

The phone will boot and be ready for use within five seconds of turning it on, and is also fast to charge - Huawei claims the phone charges within 90 minutes.
