The iPad mini has been described as similar to an iPad 2, but smaller.

The iPad mini has Apple's A5 processor in it, and a 7.9-inch screen with a 1024 x 768 pixel resolution.
The iPad mini uses a 5W power brick, just as the iPhone 5 does.

The iPad mini and fourth generation iPad both feature Apple's smaller 'lightning' connector, first introduced on the iPhone 5 in September. And visible here are the stereo speakers, new to iPad.

Those used to high-resolution Retina screens will be able to see the difference in the iPad mini right away.

Next to an iPad 2, the smaller side bezel and overall screen size differences are obvious. The iPad mini can be held in one hand.
The edges of the iPad mini (right) are squared off compared to the iPad 2.
