Orcon combines phone & modem: Genius!

Orcon’s new Genius is the first product to combine
a VoIP phone handset and wireless ADSL2+ modem – you can also plug a regular phone handset into the device to make calls over the internet.

It's available now to customers all over NZ, rather than just those in the large cities.

“The beauty here is that the way you use the phone doesn’t change. It’s the background smarts that take advantage of putting calls over the internet that changes, so you won’t notice any difference apart from the size of your bill,” said Orcon CEO Scott Bartlett in a press release.

“This is the way of the future – pretty soon all content will be transferred via your internet connection. With Orcon Genius you can bin the traditional fixed phone line and make your phone calls over the internet and save money.”
As we went to press, prices had not been revealed, but Bartlett said that packages would start from $70 per month.

Orcon Genius has additional features, such as sending your voicemail as an audio file to your email address. Users can also charge USB-powered cell phones and MP3 players, and use it as central place to back-up files to an external hard drive.

Orcon is also launching a version of Orcon Genius that ships without a handset, called Orcon Genius lite.

First? First in NZ, sure. I had this in Japan 6 years ago.

Anyway, still waiting for the specs on the Genius wireless router.

111 In 40 years on this planet I have called 111 exactly zero times... willing to take the risk I don't need a dedicated line to emergency services ...

111 If you buy a UPS for the modem then the phone line will still work as long as the UPS is running

Genius ? I have heard that Orcon's customer service is not the best so that puts me off and how many gigabytes a month would some one use making phone calls ? lots of unanswered questions

Genius ? You get 30GB a month and the phone calls are not deducted from your 30GB quota, plus you can browse TradeMe as well without any quota being deducted.

So if you think about it, a basic phone rental charge is around $54 with telecom and then add your broadband connection, whatever that costs. So at $70 a month that is $54 for your phone connection and $16 for 30GB of data with a Max + Max speed broadband connection a month. I think that is not too bad really.

Genius ? I love their service. I personally think it's what set them apart from Telecom etc. I also like the fact that it's owned by the taxpayer. My mate told me about them and I've personally had a further 6 mates or so swap to them as well. No term contracts..... give them a go.

Genius? Not so genius if your internet is down and you need to contact emergency services. "Use your mobile" doesn't cut it if you don't have one.

Genius? If you don't have a mobile phone then maybe instead of buying this and complaining you should get one its the way of the future

Genius? Hey if you don't have a mobile then I don't think you will be looking at Voip solutions; what do they say crawl before you walk? I have been with Orcon now for more than year and they top any service/solution that I had with T/com and for half the price....excellent service Orcon NZ!

Genius? That's like someone who 70 years ago thought "and if my car breaks down how am I going to get somewhere? Better keep the horse" This is the beginning of the end for phone lines as we know them.
