NZ Lotto launches mobile website

New Zealand Lotteries' website has undergone a design overhaul which includes a new version of the site, optimised for viewing on mobile devices, the company said.

The website, mylotto.co.nz, also has a new look when accessed from a PC.

New Zealand Lotteries' chief executive Wayne Pickup said the new site was much easier for users to navigate, so it would be easier for customers to play Lotto and find results.

However, the biggest change is the introduction of the mobile website.

"Mobile devices are becoming New Zealanders preferred way of getting online, with smartphone penetration rates now estimated at more than 40 percent of the New Zealand population," Pickup said.

"We need to reflect customer shopping trends, so we’ve designed MyLotto Mobile especially for smartphone access."

Customers can "easily buy tickets, check results and access their stored ‘favourite numbers’", NZ Lotteries said in a statement.

Online sales of Lotto tickets currently make up five percent of all sales and there are currently 200,000 registered mylotto.co.nz users, the company said.

The mobile site should automatically load when users visit mylotto.co.nz from their smartphones.

Not anything like what I'd want MyLotto to be... Despite emailing MyLotto a year or so ago, then again talking to them when their new website was launched, to explain how annoying it is that we can't use autocomplete on the login/password screen (like pretty much every single other website), they do not bother to respond to feedback or explain why they have set up their website this way. On phoning their customer services department to reiterate this, I was told that my email has been passed on to the web team, which I actually found out really meant, "If you sent us an email, we would probably have passed it on". I was also told that I am only one of 200,000 people who use the website. Yes, MyLotto, I do realise that, but I've been putting up with its annoying login feature since it's initiation now, so it really would be nice if you take some notice of what your LOYAL users like, rather than telling us what you'd like us to like.

Too pale, too big The new site is pretty in pastel but not well designed for usability. I found that it was necessary to scroll the page to find things to click or accept (such things should be obviously visible), the layout of the screens is not clear (unlike the obvious and guiding arrows in the previous site). It also use a pale blue on white colour scheme which must be design 101 of how NOT to design a page. Many people will experience difficulties with the low contrast between these colours.
