Multiple iPhone 5 prototypes being tested at Apple

Ashleigh Allsopp | Thursday, May 24 2012Apple hasn't made its mind up about what the next-generation iPhone will look like yet, according to new reports. The company is thought to be testing multiple prototypes of the new iPhone, two of which have a bigger and better display.
9to5Mac claims that it has 'independently heard' that two of the sixth generation iPhones being tested by Apple has a higher resolution display that is a fraction under the rumoured 4in display.
According to the report, Apple has 'a few' prototype sixth-gen iPhones 'floating around' Apple's headquarters, all of which are locked in thick disguise shells to prevent "undisclosed" employees from seeing the new external design.
9to5Mac talks about two of those prototypes: The iPhone 5,1 and iPhone 5,2, which are codenamed N41AP and N42AP respectively. Both have a larger screen, measuring 3.999 inches diagonally. The Retina display's resolution will increase from 640 x 940, to 640 x 1136, adding an extra 176 pixels to the height of the display. The width of the screen will stay the same, at 1.9632 inches, says the report, but the height will be a taller 3.484 inches.
Apple is also testing iOS 6, with builds that are designed specifically to take advantage of the new resolution in the next iPhone. The builds have an extra row of icons, which is made possible by the taller display, and "extended application user interfaces that offer views of more content," says the report.
The two prototypes also feature a home button, and a smaller dock connector that Apple is planning to implement in all of its iOS devices eventually. The new connector is a narrower version of the current dock connector, and falls between the size of a Micro-USB and Mini-USB connector, says 9to5Mac.
