Ed Oswald | Wednesday, August 29 2012LG announced Monday that it will be launching a new Smart TV game portal called Game World in the second half of this year. Game World is exclusively for LG's Cinema 3D Smart TV lineup, and will offer free and paid games, some of which will be in 3D.
LG will initially offer games in the action, adventure, arcade, puzzle, RPG, shooter, simulation, sports, and strategy categories. The company didn't mention any specific titles in its announcement, though the promo image suggests Air Penguin 3D, Shadowgun, Cut the Rope, Plants vs. Zombies, and Frisbee Forever will be part of the lineup.
According to the company's president and CEO Havis Kwon, Game World will host "popular" game titles as well as games developed "exclusively for LG Cinema 3D Smart TVs".
LG's Smart TV operating system is based on NetCast, its own in-house smart device platform. The company also plans on creating an Android-based smart television set, though Game World will likely not be compatible with such a set.
Gamers with LG Cinema 3D Smart TVs should be excited about the upcoming Game World, unless they happen to be into more mature titles - such as games with lots of blood and gore - since LG won't be including such titles. Kwon says the games in the store will be limited to those that are "suitable for everyone."
In other words, don't expect a port of Grand Theft Auto or Call of Duty to Game World.
