The former chief executive of internet advocacy organisation InternetNZ will be heading up Kim Dotcom's controversial new startup, Mega.

Vikram Kumar, who recently resigned from his post at the non-profit InternetNZ, will be taking over from interim CEO Tony Lentino.

“I have assisted Mega since its inception, putting time and energy into finding investors, setting up support staff and general overview of the company in its initial stage," said Lentino.

"Now Mega runs on a day-to-day routine and I am pleased to hand the role of CEO to Vikram who is an experienced leader in the internet industry.”

Kumar said that Mega was an "exciting" business, and that two million people had signed up since its inception on 20 January.

"I look forward to building on this initial success to develop Mega into a significant company on the international internet stage," Kumar said.

Tony Lentino will stay on as a director of Mega and continue to run his own business, Instra.

Mega is a cloud storage operation launched by Kim Dotcom, who is currently fighting extradition from New Zealand to the US. If extradited Dotcom will face charges of copyright infringement, racketeering, and money laundering.

The charges relate to his previous, similar business, Megaupload.
