CES 2012: A CES snapshot

We've been out and about on the show floor on the first official day of the biggest tech event on the calendar, the Consumer Electronics Show.

Between press conferences and meetings, we've managed to get out and about on the show floor on the first official day of the biggest technology event on the calendar, the Consumer Electronics Show. So far, we've seen a basketball player, a celebrity chef, statues of Mario, Hello Kitty everything, and more gadgets than one person could test in a lifetime. Check out some of the pictures we've taken below.

Microsoft's booth is all lit up in its Metro-design colours. This year the company is putting Metro on all of its major platforms - Windows, Windows Phone and Xbox 360.

Just across from Microsoft, Intel's booth stretches up and along the ceiling. Intel are this year pushing ultrabooks as the future of mainstream computing.

LG has one of the biggest booths at CES – it could be a convention in itself. On the back of the company's booth, it showcased the 3D capability on LG's Cinema3D TVs.

There aren't many 'booth babes' at CES, but over at the Nikon booth, two women showcase the company's latest cameras – their burlesque outfits match the colours of the devices they're holding.

Samsung shows off its newly-announced, remarkably thin Super AMOLED TV. It's what the company is referring to as its 'Ultimate Smart TV'.

At the other end of Samsung's booth, the company's continuing to takes swipes at Apple and the iPhone. Samsung is giving away these t-shirts in reference to their Apple-bashing ad campaign. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=6h5JSojJN3Y

Perhaps one of the coolest parts of CES is seeing the concept technology – the stuff that's either still in the design process, or may never see the light of day. We stumbled upon this Sony Vaio concept laptop in the middle of the Sony booth.

One of Sony's current line of Vaio laptops was running the developer build of Windows 8, where Sony was controlling the OS using mouse gestures. Unfortunately, we were allowed to look, but not touch.

The Sony Xperia S is the first smartphone, along with the Sony Xperia Ion, to be a Sony-branded phone. Sony bought out Sony Ericsson late last year.

Because it wouldn’t be a party without Mario.

We're at CES until January 13, New Zealand time. Check back for more news, previews and pictures from the show.
