Apple has announced that it sold 26 million iPhones in its third fiscal quarter ending 30 June.

The large figure represents a 28% growth in sales of the smartphone compared to the same quarter of last year. However, this is down from the 35.1 million iPhones sold during the previous quarter of this year.

Apple said its quarterly revenue came in at US$35bn (NZ$42.5bn) with a net profit of $8.8bn, up on the $28.6bn and $7.3bn, respectively from the same quarter of last year. International sales accounted for 62 percent of the firm's revenue.

Record sales of the iPad tablet were seen with a total of 17 million sold during the quarter. This is an 84% growth compared to the equivalent quarter of last year.

Mac sales saw a much smaller growth of just two percent to 3 million units while iPods declined by 10 percent to 6.8 million.

Apple said it would release OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion today and is looking forward to 'amazing new products' which are in the pipeline. Its iOS 6 software for iPhone and iPad is due to launch this spring.
