Chris Gardner | Thursday, May 10 2012Apple Inc is negotiating for the right to use the iPad name in mainland China, ahead of its release of the third version of the tablet there, Shanghai Daily has reported.
Apple is in mediation with Proview, in Shenzhen, which claims its Taiwanese affiliate which sold the iPad name to Apple in 2009 for US$56,500 did not have the legal right to sell.
Ma Dongxiao, a lawyer for Proview: "Apple is going back to the negotiation table. I am not allowed to talk in detail about Proview's wanted settlement price, but it's lower than the (reported) figures like US$400 million.
"Before that Apple was too arrogant to negotiate."
The Chinese Government is backing Proview's claim.
Apple China, whose revenue is US$7.9 billion, has declined to comment on the case.
Proview is said to be in debt and banking on winning the Apple case to pay its creditors.
