Zara Baxter | Wednesday, October 03 2012 | 4 CommentsHere at New Zealand PC World, we think it's time to inject a little antipodean into the Android naming schemes. Given that only 1.8% of users are on Jelly Bean so far, it's not like anyone will notice...
Data from Google's Android Device Targeting Dashboard - a measure of the OS on handsets that have visited the Google Play store in the last fortnight - shows that uptake of the newest Android version is just 1.8%.
Ice Cream Sandwich, still only available on a handful of New Zealand phones (see below) despite being released a year ago, is on 23% of phones that have visited Google Play in the last fortnight. The two-year-old OS Gingerbread (Android 2.3) is still on well over 50% of handsets visiting the store.
The delays in updates come down to a combination of the pace of manufacturers developing updates for existing phones and carriers needing to adapt and modify drivers for their networks before rollout.
Still, given the slow uptake, and the lack of a name for the next version of Android, we're taking a proactive, antipodean-friendly approach with a few suggestions for the Android crew. We think it's likely they'll never see a phone handset... but even so, we've opted for deserts that will make great looking Android logos.
