Mass Effect
Lesbian love scene. Actually, a lesbian love scene with an alien in it.
Scott Bartley | Tuesday, April 29 2008No, we’re not talking about a George Lucas wet dream, we’re talking about the lesbian love scene with an alien in it that appears in BioWare’s latest RPG, Mass Effect. It got a good airing on YouTube and various other video repositories, gave the game a good PR kick in the pants and even caused the game to be banned in ultra-conservative Singapore, but after viewing the scene, we can report more risqué behaviour on offer during an episode of Campbell Live. Just as well then that Mass Effect doesn’t rely on cheap tricks to win over gamers.
The story is set in a future where humans discover ancient alien ruins on Mars, an event that spurs mankind into action and sets us on our way to the stars. A barely understood alien technology that manipulates the very fabric of space and time, thus allowing interstellar travel, helps a bit in this regard. To top things off, “element zero” causes 10% of the population to suddenly gain powerful psychic abilities. Throw in various conflicts with other species we encounter on our new-found galactic journeying and you have the husk of a wonderfully solid science fiction universe to play in.
This being an RPG, you get to pick and choose how your character interacts with others. You can present yourself as a scoundrel or a good guy and the way you build your character’s back story through your interactions makes for an entirely convincing storyline. In addition to “chatting” your way through the game there is, of course, a well-implemented combat system (your combat skills depend on which class of character you chose to be at the beginning of the game) providing plenty of action to keep those of us with short attention spans occupied. And, even better, if you’re the type who likes to go exploring, there is a massive game universe to flit around – including uncharted planets to land on – when you feel like a wee change from the main missions.
